Chapter 13 - The Snatch Attempt

The storm raged harder as I sped toward Lily’s private preschool on the north side of the city. My heart was a drum beat of adrenaline. Victor and Evelyn didn't just want the trust fund anymore—they wanted absolute psychological dominance. Taking Lily was the ultimate leverage to force me into surrendering the evidence.
I pulled into the preschool driveway at 3:10 PM, just as a black SUV with dark windows skidded to a halt beside the main entrance.
Two men in tactical black coats stepped out, one of them holding a fraudulent emergency court order signed by Victor’s corrupt appellate judge. Behind them stepped Evelyn, holding a pink umbrella, looking like a vulture descending on prey.
"Stand aside," Evelyn ordered the terrified headmistress at the front desk. "I am the biological grandmother and legal temporary guardian designated under state order 409."
"That order is fraudulent!" I yelled, slamming the heavy glass front doors open and stepping into the lobby.
Evelyn turned slowly, her eyes flashing with cruel delight. "Ah, the mother arrives. Look at you, trembling like a wet dog. You think your little papers protect you? Victor owns the judiciary in this circuit now, Claire."
"He doesn't own the federal marshals," I snapped.
From behind the school's inner security doors stepped four uniformed Federal Agents, led by Marcus and a stern-faced woman carrying a heavy leather tactical folder.
Evelyn's smile froze. "What is this?"
"This," the lead Federal Agent stepped forward, displaying her badge, "is a federal warrant for immediate arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District. State judges don't have jurisdiction over interstate child trafficking and bribery of public officials, Mrs. Montgomery."
The two men in tactical coats immediately raised their hands, stepping away from Evelyn.
"Victor!" Evelyn shrieked into her lapel microphone. "Victor, do something!"

"Victor can't help you," I walked up to her, leaning in until I was inches from her pale, trembling face. "While you were getting your hair done for your grand release, my team proved that Victor transferred two million dollars from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands directly to Judge Miller’s private trust yesterday afternoon. It's wire fraud, federal bribery, and treason against court protocol."
Evelyn backed away, her foot catching on the welcome mat. She fell hard onto the polished marble floor, her pink umbrella clattering uselessly beside her.
