Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Museum

The grand entrance hall of the former Hawthorne estate—now officially christened the Hawthorne Historical and Architectural Heritage Center—echoed with the cheerful chatter of visiting school children. Sunlight streamed through the high leaded glass windows, casting long, geometric patterns across the polished marble floor where Mara had once lain pretending to be unconscious.
Mara stood on the second-floor mezzanine, clipboard in hand, reviewing the installation manifests for the upcoming autumn exhibition. Her hair was pulled back in a practical knot, and a soft, contented smile played across her lips as she watched Oliver, now five years old, crouch near a display case to inspect a scale model of an old Victorian bridge.
"Mommy, look! A tiny train!" Oliver called out, pointing excitedly at the miniature track layout.
"I see it, sweetheart," Mara laughed, walking down the sweeping staircase. Her hand brushed lightly against the wooden banister. The lingering ghosts of the past no haunted her; they were merely history now—cataloged, labeled, and safely locked behind glass.
At the front entrance, a tall man in a heavy charcoal overcoat pushed open the oak doors. He kept his head bowed slightly, his wide-brimmed hat casting a shadow across his face as he stepped out of the chilly drizzle and into the warmth of the lobby. It was Arthur Vance.

He didn't look at the museum exhibits or the cheerful crowds. His eyes were locked entirely on the central display cabinet positioned directly beneath the grand staircase—the secure vault containing the personal effects of Robert Hawthorne.
Vance walked slowly toward the case, pulling a small, specialized metal tension tool from his coat pocket.
