Chapter 16 - The Silent Cell

Inside the bleak concrete walls of the federal holding facility, the television screen flickered with the evening news broadcast.
In her isolated maximum-security cell, Evelyn Hawthorne sat upright on her narrow steel cot, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Her hair was stark white now, her posture rigid, her eyes fixed on the small screen mounted high on the wall.
The anchor’s voice echoed flatly through the metal room: "...and in local news today, an attempted theft at the Hawthorne Historical Center was foiled earlier this afternoon. Federal authorities have confirmed that the recovery of the final Hawthorne trust artifacts permanently seals all offshore asset loops, ending a five-year legal battle over the estate's disputed holdings."
Evelyn stared at the image flashing on the screen—a photograph of the museum’s front entrance, bright, welcoming, and filled with laughing children. There was no mention of her name. There was no legacy left to claim. The empire she had spent her entire life guarding, manipulating, and bleeding for had been quietly transformed into a public park.

A correctional officer’s heavy boots echoed down the steel-lined hallway, stopping outside her door. The small slot in the metal door clicked open, sliding a gray plastic tray containing a meager evening meal onto the floor.
Evelyn didn't move. She didn't look down at the food. She simply closed her eyes, the silence of the cell pressing in around her—the exact same silence Mara had heard years ago when she lay on the grand marble landing, waiting for the truth to finally speak.
