Chapter 17 - Saturday Morning Light

The following Saturday morning dawned bright, clear, and unseasonably warm. Sunlight poured generously through the large, uncurtained windows of the downtown townhouse, painting golden rectangles across the scuffed wooden floors.

In the kitchen, the smell of burnt pancakes and freshly brewed espresso filled the air.

"Oliver, I swear if you put another Lego brick in the toaster, we are calling an electrical engineer," Daniel called out, laughing as he flipped a slightly charred pancake onto a ceramic plate.

Oliver giggled, running across the living room rug with a handful of colored plastic blocks. "It’s not a toaster, Dad! It’s a spaceship launch pad!"

Mara sat at the worn wooden dining table, a stack of architectural sketches spread out before her. She was designing a brand-new community playground for the east district—a project she had won fair and square through her own firm, without a single corporate board meeting, a single filtered whisper, or a single conditional demand.

Daniel walked over, setting a plate piled high with golden pancakes and fresh berries in front of her, leaning down to press a warm kiss into her hair.

"Thinking about the new community design?" Daniel asked softly, resting his hand on her shoulder.

"Just thinking about how different everything is," Mara murmured, looking up into his warm, steady eyes. "No corridors. No hidden safes. No family committees."

"Just us," Daniel smiled, pulling up a chair and sitting beside her.

From the hallway, Oliver rushed over, climbing uninvited onto his father’s lap with a dramatic leap. "Can we go to the museum today, Mom? I want to check on my bridge!"

Mara laughed, trading a warm, knowing glance with her husband. "Only if we stop for ice cream on the way back."
