Chapter 5 - Shadows in the City

The downtown loft was everything the estate was not: loud, chaotic, full of natural light, and vibrating with the authentic pulse of city life. Sirens echoed in the distance, the smell of fresh bakery bread drifted up from the corner shop, and the floors creaked happily with every step.
Mara sat on the worn velvet sofa, her feet propped up on a coffee table cluttered with architectural blueprints, baby care books, and half-empty mugs of tea. Daniel was in the tiny kitchen assembling a crib they had ordered online, cursing softly as a rogue hex wrench slipped from his fingers.
"Need help with that architect level engineering?" Mara teased, smiling as she rubbed her belly.
"I’ll have you know I designed commercial complexes," Daniel laughed, wiping a smudge of grease off his forehead with his sleeve. "A crib should be child's play."
Their peaceful afternoon was abruptly shattered by a sharp, aggressive hammering on the front door down the hall.
Mara froze, her smile fading instantly. Daniel dropped the wrench, his expression hardening as he walked cautiously toward the heavy wooden door. He checked the peephole, his body instantly tensing.
"Who is it?" Daniel asked, his voice sharp.
"Open up, Mr. Hawthorne," a raspy, unfamiliar voice echoed through the wood. "We have a court-ordered subpoena regarding the emergency liquidation of the Hawthorne Trust assets."
Daniel unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open. Standing in the narrow hallway was a tall, sharp-featured man in a charcoal suit holding a thick manila envelope, flanked by two private security guards in plain clothes.
"Mr. Daniel Hawthorne?" the man asked, flashing a gold badge that wasn't police issue. "I'm Arthur Vance, senior legal executor for the late Robert Hawthorne's secret codicil estate."
"My father’s will was probated years ago," Daniel said, blocking the doorway with his frame. "Whatever you’re selling, we aren't buying."
Vance smiled thinly, a humorless expression that didn't reach his eyes. "Not a will, Mr. Hawthorne. A contingency rider. Filed thirty minutes before your father passed away. It states that if any direct heir attempts to dissolve, transfer, or abandon their executive position within the family holding company without matriarchal approval, the entire trust reverts not to the family... but to an unlisted third-party beneficiary."

Mara stood up slowly from the sofa, walking toward the door with a chilling sense of dread settling in her chest. "What third-party beneficiary?" she asked, her voice steady.
Vance looked past Daniel, his gaze locking onto Mara with predatory satisfaction. "A holding entity registered three days ago under the name Vanderbilt-Hawthorne Asset Recovery LLC. Controlled entirely by... Mrs. Evelyn Hawthorne and her newly appointed legal proxy: Celeste Hawthorne, released on an emergency medical bail this morning."
