Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

The interrogation room at the downtown precinct smelled of old coffee and cheap floor wax. Under the harsh glare of a fluorescent overhead light, Celeste Hawthorne sat with her arms tightly crossed, her designer blazer wrinkled, her makeup slightly smeared from hours of relentless questioning.
Across the steel table sat Detective Moreno and a second investigator, Inspector Hayes. In the adjacent observation room, Mara sat beside Daniel behind the one-way mirror, watching every micro-expression flicker across her sister-in-law's face.
"Let’s play it again, Celeste," Moreno said calmly, tapping a button on his recorder.
The tinny audio filled the small room, broadcasting Celeste’s voice from three nights prior in the Hawthorne estate library: "...if she has that boy, Daniel's focus shifts entirely to her side of the family. The trust provisions state clearly that heirs must be raised under Hawthorne oversight. If we push her out now, we control the custody settlement before the baby is even born."
Celeste’s eyes darted frantically toward the recording device. "That’s... that’s manipulated! That’s AI-generated nonsense! Anyone can fake a voice file nowadays!"
"We ran a voice-print spectrum analysis through the state forensic lab two hours ago," Hayes stated flatly, tossing a thick dossier onto the table. "It matches your vocal patterns down to the micro-frequency. Furthermore, we pulled the security logs from the east wing smart-locks. You disabled the corridor cameras twenty minutes before Mara walked down those stairs."
Celeste slammed her hands onto the table, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the linoleum. "You can't do this to me! Do you know who my family is? Do you know how many judges, politicians, and commissioners sit on our foundation board? We own this town!"
"You used to own it," a quiet voice echoed from the doorway.
Celeste whipped around. Daniel stood in the doorway, having walked in from the observation room. His expression was hollow, stripped of the last vestiges of family loyalty. He looked at his sister not with anger, but with profound, numbing disgust.
"Daniel," Celeste breathed, her voice suddenly softening into a desperate plea. "Daniel, you have to understand. It was for the company. It was to protect the estate. If Mara takes half in a divorce, the commercial division collapses—"
"You tried to kill my wife," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "And you tried to kill my son."
"I just wanted her to lose the baby, Daniel! I didn't want her to—" Celeste stopped abruptly, her hands flying to her mouth as the full weight of her confession hung heavy in the air.

Moreno clicked off the recorder, sliding a pair of silver handcuffs across the table. "Celeste Hawthorne, you are under arrest for attempted manslaughter, conspiracy to commit domestic sabotage, and tampering with surveillance evidence. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the cuffs clicked shut around her wrists, Celeste stared through the glass partition straight into Mara’s eyes. The mask of untouchable privilege had completely shattered, revealing a cornered, desperate animal beneath. But Mara didn't look away. She simply placed a hand on her stomach, feeling Oliver kick against her palm—a reminder that they had survived.
