In a cold, high-security federal correctional facility three hundred miles away, the television in the communal recreation room flickered quietly in the corner.
Celeste Hawthorne sat at a stainless-steel table, her fingers idly tracing the scratches on the surface. On the screen, a morning talk show segment featured an interview with a prominent young architect and historic preservationist named Mara Hawthorne, discussing her newly published book on architectural ethics and domestic restoration.
The interviewer smiled brightly toward the camera. "Your journey has inspired millions of readers across the country, Mara. How did you manage to survive such an overwhelming storm and come out stronger on the other side?"
On the screen, Mara looked directly into the camera lens, her expression calm, radiant, and completely untouchable.
