Chapter 19 - Evening on the Porch

The sun dipped slowly beneath the city skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose.

Mara and Daniel sat side by side on their crooked wooden front porch, two mugs of chamomile tea resting on the small wicker table between them. Down on the sidewalk, neighbors walked by, waving and calling out friendly hellos. Inside the house, Oliver was fast asleep upstairs after a long day of building block towers and chasing neighborhood dogs.

"You know," Daniel said quietly, breaking the comfortable silence as he watched a distant city bus rumble down the street. "Sometimes I still catch myself waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for a phone call, a lawyer’s letter, or another family demand."

Mara turned her head, smiling gently in the twilight. She reached across the small space, slipping her fingers securely into his hand. "There are no more shoes to drop, Daniel. The house is empty of ghosts."

"It’s not empty," Daniel corrected softly, squeezing her hand back. "It’s full of us."

Mara nodded, leaning her head against his shoulder as a warm evening breeze swept through the quiet neighborhood, rustling the leaves of the tomatoes growing poorly in their rooftop planters.
