Chapter 15 - The Weight of Steel

The heavy silver pocket watch slipped from Vance’s coat pocket, tumbling through the air before striking the wet cobblestones with a sharp, metallic ring. The back casing popped open, revealing not clockwork gears, but a tiny, customized micro-SD storage card slotted neatly inside the brass housing.

Daniel lunged forward, pinning Vance against the brick wall with a firm, practiced grip just as Marcus rounded the corner with his cuffs ready.

"Got you," Daniel panted, keeping his weight pressed against the desperate man.

Marcus moved in swiftly, clicking the silver cuffs onto Vance’s wrists. "Nice try, counselor. Let's see how much your offshore accounts help you from a federal holding cell."

Mara walked slowly over to the wet cobblestones, ignoring the pouring rain. She knelt down, picking up the heavy silver pocket watch. The micro-SD card was glinting darkly in the gray light. She didn't open it. She didn't need to inspect the stolen secrets of a dying empire.

She stood up, walking over to Marcus as he hauled the struggling attorney toward the security vehicle idling by the lane.

"Hand this over to Detective Moreno," Mara instructed, handing the watch to the security guard. "Tell him the chain of custody is secure, and the chapter is finally closed."

Daniel walked back over to her, wiping rain from his forehead, his chest heaving with adrenaline. He looked down at his wife with a mixture of intense pride and fierce protective love. "Are you okay? You shouldn't have run after him like that."

Mara smiled, reaching out to straighten the collar of his jacket, exactly as she had done years ago before their lives changed forever. "I told you, Daniel. I don't run from the Hawthornes anymore. I outrun them."
