Chapter 2 - The Echo of Truth

The sterile white walls of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and lingering dread. Mara sat upright in the hospital bed, the blanket pulled tightly across her growing stomach. A portable fetal monitor strapped to her abdomen emitted a steady, rhythmic whoosh-whoosh-whoosh—the sound of Oliver’s heart beating strong and fast.
The door clicked open, and Daniel rushed in, his tie missing, his hair disheveled, and his face pale with sheer panic. He didn't look at the chair by the corner where Detective Moreno sat quietly taking notes; he rushed straight to the bedside, dropping to his knees.
"Mara! Oh God, Mara, are you and the baby okay?" Daniel choked out, reaching out to grab her hands, but Mara pulled them away, resting them protectively over her stomach.
"Don't," Mara said, her voice devoid of its usual warmth. "Don't touch me, Daniel."
Daniel flinched as if struck. "What are you talking about? Celeste called me saying you had a terrible fall, that you lost your balance during an argument—"
"Celeste lied," Mara interrupted, her eyes locking onto his with chilling clarity.
"She wouldn't—"
"Mr. Hawthorne," Detective Moreno interrupted, standing up from his chair and stepping into the dim light of the hospital room. He held up a clear evidence bag containing Mara’s cracked phone. "Your sister made a statement at the scene claiming your wife attacked her. Fortunately, your wife has a habit of documenting things. Specifically, audio recordings of every conversation held in that foyer over the last three weeks."
Daniel stared at the plastic bag, color draining rapidly from his face. "What? That’s... that’s impossible. You can't record people without consent in private homes—"
"In the state of emergency protection and domestic dispute filings, digital safety shortcuts activated under duress are fully admissible," Moreno replied smoothly, tapping the bag. "Especially when they capture crystal-clear admissions of premeditated harassment, deliberate physical sabotage, and a coordinated cover-up involving multiple household members."
The door swung open again, crashing against the rubber stopper. Evelyn Hawthorne strode into the room, flanked by two family attorneys whose tailored suits looked entirely out of place in a hospital wing.
"This is an outrage," Evelyn snapped, her voice cutting through the tension like glass. "Detective Moreno, you will retract your statements immediately or our legal team will have your badge before midnight. Daniel, tell this incompetent fool to get out of our sight."
Daniel looked back and forth between his imperious mother and his fiercely resolute wife. For the first time in his life, the invisible strings connecting him to the Hawthorne empire snapped. He looked down at the floor, his voice barely a whisper. "Mom... what did Celeste do?"

Evelyn froze, her lips parting in shock. "She did nothing! That girl fell down the stairs because she’s unstable, ungrateful, and unfit to carry a Hawthorne heir!"
Mara didn't yell. She didn't cry. She simply reached over, turned up the volume on the fetal monitor so the rhythmic heartbeat echoed loudly off the clinical walls, and smiled a cold, terrifying smile. "Let’s play the audio, Detective. Let’s see what the family committee has to say about that."
