Chapter 11 - The Echo of FootstepsThe silence in Caleb’s studio apartment was thick, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of a leaky faucet in the kitchenette. Three months had passed since the courtroom gavel fell, sealing his fate, but the walls of his new life felt like they were constantly closing in.

He sat on the edge of a sagging mattress that lacked a proper frame, staring blankly at the peeling wallpaper. His phone lay on the floor beside him, its screen dark and dead. No notifications. No urgent emails from high-profile clients. No secret text messages from a second life that no longer existed.
The firm had not only fired him; they had quietly circulated a memo regarding his ethical violations to ensure his name was radioactive throughout the entire corporate and legal community. His savings were completely wiped out by the legal fees and the brutal divorce settlement Emily had successfully secured.
Caleb reached down, picked up the phone, and pressed the power button. The screen flickered to life, displaying his home screen—a default landscape photo because he had deleted every single memory of Emily, and he had never dared to keep photos of Rachel on his primary device.
A sudden urge, desperate and irrational, washed over him. He tapped on his contacts list, scrolling down until he found a number he had not dialed in ninety days.
Emily.
His thumb hovered over the call button. He knew it was blocked. He knew she wouldn't answer. Yet, the sheer weight of his isolation pushed him forward. He pressed call.
Instead of the usual busy signal or immediate disconnect, the line rang once, twice, three times.

“The person you are calling is unavailable,” a cold, automated voice droned. Then, a sharp click.
Caleb threw the phone across the room. It struck the bare drywall with a hollow thud and clattered to the floor, the battery pack popping loose. He buried his face in his hands, finally realizing the terrifying truth: the prison he had built for himself was completely inescapable.
