Chapter 18 - An Unexpected VisitorA week later, as Emily and Rachel were reviewing quarterly profit projections in their downtown office, the front glass door chimed softly.
Emily looked up from her tablet, expecting their new administrative assistant with the mail. Instead, standing awkwardly in the doorway was a middle-aged woman with tired eyes and a familiar nervous posture—Caleb’s mother, Linda.
The room went dead silent. Emily slowly stood up from her chair, while Rachel crossed her arms, watching the older woman with a cautious, guarded expression.
"Emily," Linda whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she clutched a worn leather handbag to her chest. "I... I know I have no right to be here. I know what Caleb did."
Emily motioned for Linda to sit down at the small conference table, maintaining a calm, composed demeanor. "What is this about, Linda?"
Linda sank into a chair, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I came to apologize. Not for him—God knows he deserves every bit of what he’s gotten. But... I want you to know none of us knew. He lied to me, too. He told me you two were happily traveling, that you had moved on, that everything was fine." Linda looked up, her eyes pleading for a shred of grace. "He’s lost his apartment. He’s sleeping in his car. I tried to help him, but he won't let anyone in. I just... I wanted you to know that the monster he became wasn't raised by us."
Emily looked at the grieving mother, feeling a sharp pang of residual sorrow not for Caleb, but for the collateral damage his web of lies had inflicted on everyone around him.

"I'm sorry you had to find out who your son really was, Linda," Emily said gently, walking over to place a comforting hand on the older woman's shoulder. "But I can't save him. No one can save Caleb except Caleb. And frankly, it's too late."
Linda nodded slowly, defeated, and quietly gathered her things before walking out into the afternoon sunlight, leaving Emily and Rachel alone once more in their sanctuary of truth.
