Chapter 6 - The SetupTwo days later, Caleb sat at the mahogany dining room table in the suburban house he shared with Emily—or rather, the house he used to share with her. The front door was unlocked when he arrived home from his office, expecting a cold, tearful confrontation. Instead, the house was dead silent.

"Emily?" he called out nervously, dropping his briefcase on the foyer floor.

No answer. He walked into the kitchen. The coffee maker was cold. On the center island sat a single white envelope with his name written in Emily’s sharp, precise handwriting.

His hands shook as he tore it open. Inside was a formal letter from a high-powered divorce attorney, complete with asset freezes, demands for immediate vacation of the property, and a complete itemization of the hidden downtown apartment lease and joint account drainings.

Beneath the legal document was a handwritten note from Emily:

“You always said you hated boats, Caleb. But I think you’re going to find yourself swimming with the sharks very soon. See you in court.”

Caleb’s face drained of all color. He grabbed his phone and dialed Emily’s number. It went straight to voicemail. He tried again. Blocked. He dialed Rachel’s number—straight to voicemail. Blocked.

Panic, cold and sharp, gripped his chest. He rushed to the home office to check his laptop, only to find it locked out with a password he didn't know. He grabbed his car keys, sprinting out the front door, desperate to salvage something of his collapsing life before it was too late.

What Caleb didn't know was that Emily and Rachel weren't just sitting back waiting for court. They had coordinated with mutual friends, colleagues at Caleb’s firm, and even the local newspaper’s lifestyle section, which frequently ran features on local community figures—figures like Caleb, who loved maintaining a pristine public reputation above all else.

By afternoon, a carefully curated package containing the contents of Rachel’s manila folder—along with proof of corporate expense account fraud Caleb had used to fund his secret apartment—landed squarely on the desk of Caleb’s managing partner.
