Chapter 4 - The Joint Account TrapThe next morning, the digital clock on Sarah’s guest room nightstand read 6:15 AM. Emily woke up not with tears, but with absolute clarity. She grabbed her phone and immediately checked her mobile banking app.

As expected, Caleb hadn't transferred their shared savings yet—probably because he was too busy trying to do damage control with Rachel. But Emily knew financial blood was the only kind that truly hurt men like Caleb.
Without hesitation, Emily transferred ninety percent of their joint savings account into a separate, private account she had opened in her maiden name late last night. She left just enough in the joint account to cover a couple of utility bills so the bank wouldn't flag the activity immediately.
Next, she drafted a formal message to their shared accountant, notifying him that all financial decisions moving forward required her direct authorization.
Her phone buzzed violently on the nightstand. It was Caleb.
Call me, please. We need to talk. This is insane, the text read.
Emily ignored it, locking the screen and tossing the phone onto the bed. She walked into the bathroom, splashed cold water on her face, and stared at her reflection. The woman looking back wasn't the timid wife who had spent four years tip-toeing around her husband’s fake medical conditions. This was a woman ready to reclaim her life.
An hour later, Emily and Sarah sat at a local diner booth three blocks away. Sipping black coffee, Emily scrolled through a messaging app where an unexpected notification had just popped up.
It was a message request from an unknown number.
Emily opened it. It was from Rachel.
Emily. I need to talk to you. I just found out things I wish I never knew. Can we meet?
May you like
Emily stared at the screen, her pulse quickening. She looked across the table at Sarah, who raised her eyebrows in silent agreement.
Name the place and time, Emily typed back.
