Chapter 7 - Public ExecutionCaleb arrived at his office building downtown feeling like a man walking through a minefield. Every hallway whispered. As he stepped off the elevator on the fourteenth floor, he noticed several junior associates staring at him, quickly looking away the moment he made eye contact.

He pushed open the heavy glass doors to his department and headed straight for his office. Before he could reach his desk, his intercom buzzed aggressively.
"Caleb. Partner’s office. Now."
The voice of Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner, sounded like grinding stones.
Caleb swallowed hard, smoothed down his tie, and walked down the polished corridor. He pushed open the heavy oak door of the corner office. Arthur sat behind his massive mahogany desk, looking like a statue carved from pure ice. Standing by the window, arms crossed, was the firm’s chief legal counsel.
"Close the door, Caleb," Arthur said quietly.
Caleb stepped inside and pulled the door shut behind him. "Arthur, look, whatever you’ve heard—"
Arthur held up a single sheet of paper—a printed bank statement showing company client entertainment funds diverted to a private residential lease.
"Embezzlement of firm contingency funds, fraudulent expense reporting, and conduct unbecoming of a senior partner," Arthur recited coldly. "We have the bank records, Caleb. And more importantly, your wife’s attorney was kind enough to carbon-copy us on your domestic filings."
"It's a misunderstanding! My wife is vindictive, she's—" Caleb started shouting, his voice cracking with desperation.

"Save it for a federal judge," Arthur interrupted, slamming his palm on the desk. "You’re suspended effective immediately pending termination. Security is waiting outside to escort you out of the building. Hand over your keycard, your laptop, and your office keys right now."
Caleb stood frozen. In less than forty-eight hours, his career, his marriage, his finances, and his carefully constructed house of cards had been completely dismantled. As two security guards stepped into the office to physically usher him out, Caleb realized the cruel irony of it all: he had spent years avoiding the open water, only to drown right in the middle of dry land.
