Chapter 13 - Shadows from the PastBy evening, the dust in the corporate penthouse office had settled. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the glittering lights of Miami, sipping a glass of rare vintage bourbon.

The door clicked open softly.
I didn't turn around. Muscle memory and heightened situational awareness already had my hand resting on the heavy, solid-steel tactical pen in my breast pocket.
"You always did have eyes in the back of your head, Gunny," a deep, gravelly voice chuckled from the doorway.
I spun around. Standing there in a sharp, casual civilian jacket was Master Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Vance—my old mentor from my days at Quantico, now retired from active duty and running a private intelligence syndicate.
"Marcus," I exhaled, letting my shoulders drop as a genuine smile broke across my face. "What are you doing here?"
"Word travels fast when a former Marine takes down a maritime cartel and a billion-dollar conglomerate in less than forty-eight hours," Marcus grinned, walking over and pouring himself a glass of bourbon. He raised his glass to mine. "I told you back at Quantico, Sarah. You can take the Marine out of the Corps, but you can't take the Corps out of the marine."
May you like
"I tried," I sighed, looking down at my taped knuckles. "I really thought I could trade this life for a quiet, ordinary existence with a white-picket-fence dream."
"Ordinary was never meant for you," Marcus said firmly, his eyes sharpening. "And besides... you're going to need your old skills sooner than you think. Word on the street is that Richard Davis didn't build that empire alone. He had silent partners. And they aren't happy that you just seized their cash flow."
