Chapter 9 - The Penthouse ShowdownThe glass elevator ascended smoothly, lifting me from the dark, industrial depths of the lower decks straight up to the glittering heights of Deck 10.

The observation lounge was a masterpiece of modern architecture—floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the dark, infinite ocean under a canopy of stars. The room was bathed in soft, amber mood lighting, untouched by the chaos raging elsewhere on the ship.
At the center of the lounge stood Richard Davis.
He didn't look like a terrified old man. Dressed in a bespoke Italian tuxedo, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch, he looked every bit the ruthless billionaire empire-builder he was. His eyes were cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of warmth.
"I must admit, Sarah," Richard said, taking a slow sip of his scotch as the elevator doors slid open. "David is a fool. I told him you were too dangerous to bring into the family, but he insisted on the challenge."
I stepped out of the elevator, the aluminum bat resting casually across my shoulder. "A challenge? Is that what kidnapping and psychological abuse are called in your tax bracket?"
Richard chuckled, setting his glass down on a marble table with a sharp clink. "In our world, control is everything. My son wanted a trophy wife he could break in. It seems he picked the wrong soldier."
"Your son picked someone who doesn't bow to bullies," I said, closing the distance between us in slow, deliberate strides.
Richard didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, dark smile touched his lips. He slowly reached behind his back and unholstered a sleek, silver-plated compact automatic pistol, leveling it directly at my chest.
"You're good, Sarah. In close quarters, you're deadly," Richard said calmly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "But combat training doesn't stop a bullet at ten paces."
I stopped walking. I looked at the barrel of the gun, then up into his cold, dead eyes.

"You're right, Richard," I whispered. "It doesn't."
Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, the glass ceiling above us shattered with an ear-splitting explosion of flying shards.
