Chapter 1 - The Weight of Whispers

Daniel stood frozen in the harsh fluorescent light of the hospital corridor, staring at Vanessa as if she were a stranger. Her words hung in the sterile air, heavy and poisonous. You and I could finally stop hiding. He pulled his arm from her grip, the coldness of her touch lingering on his skin.

Inside Room 402, the frantic shouting of the medical team muffled through the reinforced glass.

"Get the defibrillator! Now!" a nurse screamed.

Daniel took a step forward, his hand reaching for the door handle. He needed to be in there. He needed to undo the months of betrayal, the late nights, the silent withdrawals. But Vanessa stepped into his path, her face smooth, devoid of any genuine horror.

"Daniel, think about it," Vanessa pressed, her voice a low, calculated hiss. "Claire has been drowning you in debt and stress for years. The twins, the house, the constant medical bills. You were miserable. You told me you were."

"I was venting, Vanessa," Daniel choked out, his voice cracking. "She’s dying. My wife is dying."

Before Vanessa could respond, the heavy delivery-room door swung open. Dr. Elena Brooks stepped out into the hallway. Her scrubs were stained with blood, her hair plastered to her forehead with sweat, and her eyes burned with an icy, unyielding fury. She didn't look at Vanessa. She locked her gaze entirely on Daniel.

Daniel stepped toward her, his legs trembling. "Dr. Brooks? Claire... how is Claire? The babies?"

Dr. Brooks wiped her brow with the back of a gloved hand, leaving a streak of red. She looked past Daniel to Vanessa, who was quickly trying to smooth down her cream-colored coat and adopt a mournful expression. Then, the doctor looked back at Daniel, her voice cutting through the corridor like a scalpel.

"Mr. Mercer," Dr. Brooks said loudly enough for the entire nursing station to hear. "Your wife’s heart stopped for four minutes. We got a rhythm back, but she is currently on life support in a medically induced coma. As for your twins—a boy and a girl—they were delivered via emergency C-section. They are breathing, barely, weighing just over two pounds each. They are in the NICU fighting for their lives."

Daniel let out a ragged breath, tears finally spilling over his cheeks. "Thank God. Can I... can I see them?"

Dr. Brooks didn't move. She stepped closer to Daniel, invading his personal space, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

"You can see your children when you learn what it means to be a father, Mr. Mercer," Dr. Brooks said coldly, her voice ringing with absolute disdain. "And as for your wife—the woman you neglected while playing house in downtown hotels—she asked for you right before her heart flatlined. You were out here, holding hands with your mistress, discussing when you could 'finally stop hiding.'"

Daniel stumbled backward as if he’d been struck. "You... you heard that?"

"The whole nursing station heard it," Dr. Brooks said, turning her head slightly to glare at Vanessa. "And let me tell you something, Mr. Mercer. I have signed thousands of death certificates in my career. If your wife doesn't wake up from this coma, I will personally ensure that every detail of what happened outside this room tonight—and every cent of marital asset you funneled into luxury apartments for this parasite—is laid bare in front of a judge, a grand jury, and the medical board. Do not walk into my ICU."

With that, the doctor spun on her heel and slammed the door behind her, leaving Daniel alone in the hallway with the ruins of his life.
