Chapter 17 - Maya and Leo’s Big Milestone
Two years had passed since the night that changed everything.
The Mercer household was a chaotic, joyful symphony of toddler laughter, scattered building blocks, and tiny running feet. Maya and Leo were now thriving two-year-olds with thick curls, boundless energy, and an unbreakable bond.
It was their second birthday, and the backyard was transformed into a festive wonderland with blue and pink balloons, a custom dinosaur-and-unicorn cake, and family gathered all around.
Arthur was expertly grilling sliders on the patio while their mother handed out juice boxes.
"All right, birthday kids, time to blow out the candles!" Arthur announced, scooping Leo up onto his hip while Claire held Maya by the hand.
The twins stood in front of a heavily frosted, slightly lopsided cake adorned with two glowing candles. They took a deep, coordinated breath and blew with all their might.
Puff!
The candles went out, sending a small plume of white smoke into the afternoon air, followed by uproarious cheers and clapping from the family.
