Chapter 14 - The Verdict’s Final Echo

Inside Federal Correctional Institution Butner, miles away from the sunshine of Raleigh, Daniel Mercer sat on the edge of a thin metal cot in a stark, windowless cell.
The walls seemed to press in closer every single day.
His cellmate, a hardened white-collar offender serving a twenty-year sentence, was reading a legal brief across the room. But Daniel wasn't reading. He was staring blankly at a crumpled, faded photograph he had managed to keep hidden in the seam of his mattress.
It was a picture of Claire, taken years before the pregnancy, before the lies, before the hospital room. She was smiling, her eyes bright and full of a love he had taken completely for granted.
He remembered the sound of the monitor flatlining. He remembered Vanessa’s quiet, breathless laugh behind his shoulder.
And more than anything, he remembered Dr. Brooks walking out of that delivery room and looking at him not with anger, but with the chilling, absolute certainty of a executioner.

“You can see your children when you learn what it means to be a father, Mr. Mercer.”
Daniel dropped his face into his calloused hands, his shoulders shaking as he wept silent, useless tears in the dark. He had traded everything he ever loved for a temporary escape, and now he had all the time in the world to realize the true price of his cowardice.
