Chapter 7 - The Final Visitor

One week after her near-death experience, Claire Mercer sat propped up in bed in her private recovery room. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting a warm golden glow across the white sheets.

The door clicked open softly.

Claire looked up, expecting her mother or Arthur holding fresh flowers. Instead, a woman stepped into the room, closing the door quietly behind her.

It wasn't Arthur. It wasn't her mother.

It was Vanessa Hale.

Vanessa no longer looked like the polished, untouchable socialite in the cream-colored coat. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, her designer heels replaced by flat black boots, and her face was pale, stripped of makeup and arrogance.

Claire didn't flinch. She simply picked up a plastic cup of water, took a slow sip, and set it down.

"You have a lot of nerve coming here, Vanessa," Claire said, her voice steady, stronger than it had been in days.

Vanessa stopped at the foot of the bed, her hands twisting nervously in the pockets of a plain wool jacket. "I... I just needed to see you. For myself. To know you survived."

"Survived your laughter?" Claire asked, her dark eyes locking onto Vanessa with an intensity that made the other woman flinch. "I saw you through that glass, Vanessa. While my heart stopped. While my babies were fighting for their first breath. You stood out there and you laughed."

Tears welled in Vanessa’s eyes—real, desperate tears this time. "I panicked, Claire. Everything fell apart so fast. Daniel was arrested yesterday morning at his office. The police took everything—his car, his computers, his bank accounts. He’s facing five to ten years in federal prison."

Claire stared at her former rival, feeling a strange, hollow sort of peace. There was no anger left in her heart—only a profound, crystalline clarity.

"Daniel was never a prize, Vanessa," Claire said quietly. "He was a coward who couldn't handle the weight of real life. You wanted the man who spent money he didn't have on hotel rooms and expensive dinners. Well, congratulations. You helped him destroy himself. Now you get to live with the wreckage."

Vanessa opened her mouth as if to speak, but no words came out. The reality of what she had helped build—and what she had lost—finally crashed down around her. Without another word, Vanessa turned, opened the door, and walked out into the hallway, disappearing into the shadows of the past.
