Chapter 12 - A Stranger at the Door

Two weeks later, an unfamiliar sedan parked across the street from Claire’s colonial home.

It was late afternoon. Maya and Leo were napping upstairs, and Arthur was away handling a federal deposition in Charlotte. Claire was in the kitchen brewing chamomile tea when the doorbell rang. Three sharp, hesitant raps.

She wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked cautiously to the front door, peering through the security peephole.

Standing on her porch was a woman wearing an oversized hoodie, her hair pulled back carelessly, stripped of every ounce of the glossy, high-society glamour she once wore.

It was Vanessa.

Claire unlocked the deadbolt, pulled the door open just a few inches, and secured the safety chain. She didn't invite her in. She didn't need to.

"What do you want, Vanessa?" Claire asked, her tone flat, devoid of anger, weaponized by absolute indifference.

Vanessa’s lower lip trembled. She looked smaller, broken down by the relentless machinery of the legal and financial fallout. "I... I lost everything, Claire. My apartment was seized. My name is blacklisted in every corporate firm from here to Atlanta. Daniel’s family won't take my calls. I have nowhere to go."

"And you thought coming to the woman whose husband you stole and whose death you laughed at was your emergency shelter?" Claire’s dark eyes narrowed, flashing with a sudden, brilliant heat.

"I just wanted to say... I’m sorry," Vanessa whispered, a tear carving a muddy track down her cheek. "I thought I was winning. I didn't know it would cost me my entire life."

"Winning?" Claire let out a short, cold laugh. "Life isn't a game, Vanessa. You chose to build your foundation on someone else's destruction. The house always collapses. Leave my porch before I call my brother."

Before Vanessa could beg another word, Claire slammed the door shut and slid the deadbolt home.
