Chapter 2 - The Silent Ward

Hours melted into a agonizing blur. The hospital lobby at 4:00 AM smelled of stale coffee and industrial cleaning solution. Daniel sat in a plastic chair in the waiting area, his head buried in his hands. Vanessa had finally left—not out of remorse, but because Daniel had screamed at her to get out of his sight, threatening to call campus security if she didn't vanish.

He was entirely alone. For the first time in months, there was no phone buzzing with clandestine texts, no excuse to leave the house, no escape hatch. There was only the ticking clock on the wall and the terrifying echo of Dr. Brooks's warning.

At 6:00 AM, a weary pediatric nurse approached him.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Daniel shot up so fast his chair screeched against the linoleum. "Yes? The twins? How are they?"

"They’re stable, but fragile. They’re in incubators in NICU Unit B. You can wash up and look at them through the glass, but you cannot hold them yet."

Daniel followed the nurse down a maze of corridors, his chest tightening with every step. When they reached the NICU, he peered through the glass of incubator three and four.

Two tiny, translucent babies lay beneath heat lamps, tangled in a web of thin plastic tubes, monitors, and tape. Their chests rose and fell with a terrifying, rapid flutter. They were so small they could fit into the palm of his hand. They possessed his nose, his chin, but Claire’s dark, sweeping eyelashes.

A wave of profound, suffocating guilt crashed over him. He pressed his palms against the cold glass.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I am so, so sorry."

"Apologies don't buy diapers, Mr. Mercer."

Daniel whipped around. Dr. Brooks was standing behind him, holding a clipboard. She wasn't wearing scrubs anymore; she had changed into a sharp gray pantsuit, looking every bit the formidable adversary.

"Dr. Brooks... please. How is Claire?"

"Her vitals are stabilizing, but brain activity is minimal right now. We induced a hypothermic protocol to protect her neural pathways from the oxygen deprivation during the cardiac arrest. We won't know the extent of the damage until we try to wake her in forty-eight hours."

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat burning. "Can I... can I go to her room?"

"No," Dr. Brooks said flatly. "Her mother and brother are arriving from Chicago in two hours. They’ve already been briefed on everything. Including who was standing outside the door with you."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "Her brother? Arthur is coming?"

"Arthur Mercer is a federal prosecutor in Chicago, Mr. Mercer," Dr. Brooks said with a chilling, humorless smile. "And if I were you, I’d start praying to whatever god you believe in that Claire wakes up. Because if she doesn't, Arthur won't just sue you—he’ll dismantle every single aspect of your corporate career, your finances, and your freedom."
