Chapter 13 - The First Steps

Spring returned to North Carolina with an explosion of azaleas and warm sunlight.
Inside the bright, airy living room, twelve-month-old Maya and Leo were learning the terrifying, wobbly art of walking. Maya gripped the edge of the low oak coffee table, her tiny legs shaking like wet noodles, while Leo sat triumphantly on a plush rug, clutching a plastic fire truck.
"Come on, sweet girl," Claire encouraged from across the room, kneeling down with her arms outstretched. "You can do it. Take a step to Mommy."
Maya giggled, a bright, musical sound that filled every empty corner of the house that had once echoed with pain. She let go of the table, took one, two, wobbled dangerously to the left, and then threw herself forward straight into Claire’s open arms.
Claire hugged her tightly, burying her face in the toddler's soft curls, tears of pure joy pricking her eyes.
"That's my girl! That's my brave girl!"
Arthur walked through the front door just in time to witness the triumph, carrying a stack of mail and a massive bouquet of yellow sunflowers.

Claire looked up at her brother, feeling a profound weight lift from her shoulders. The last legal anchor tying her to her past had finally been cut loose.
