Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Ashes

While Elena was gracing the cover of Forbes, Harrison Miller was learning how to navigate the humiliating reality of living out of a cramped, roach-infested studio apartment on the south side of Chicago. His designer suits had long been pawned off for grocery money, replaced by thrift-store flannels that smelled faintly of mildew.

The corporate fallout had been total. Because Elena’s legal team had airtight documentation of his asset manipulation and corporate tax evasion, the federal indictment came down swiftly. He wasn't serving prison time yet, but he was drowning in millions of dollars in civil restitution judgments that he had zero capacity to pay.

Desperation, however, breeds delusion. Sitting at a sticky laminate table in a dingy diner, Harrison stared at his cracked smartphone screen, scrolling through old photos of Elena’s gala nights. His mind twisted the narrative until he convinced himself that she was the villain—that she had trapped him, sabotaged his career, and stolen what was rightfully his.

"She owes me," Harrison muttered to himself, slamming his coffee cup down so hard the cheap ceramic cracked. "Without my vision, she’s just a trust-fund kid playing businesswoman. I built that network. I made her relevant."

He needed leverage. Since the civil courts had stripped him of every legal asset, he decided to dig into the past. He remembered an old, forgotten safe deposit box from the early years of their marriage—a box containing confidential family trust documents and preliminary incorporation drafts signed by Elena's late father. If he could find a loophole, a technicality, or a signature out of place, he could drag her into a public defamation war and force her to cut him a multi-million-dollar settlement just to shut him up.

There was only one problem: the key to that safe deposit box was still locked inside the master safe of the lakefront mansion—the very mansion he had been legally barred from approaching under a strict restraining order.
