Chapter 9 - The Signature of Surrender

Harrison stared at the manila envelope lying on the carpet like it was a venomous snake. The reality of his situation crashed down upon him with crushing weight. There was no escape, no clever loophole, no savior coming to rescue him. The woman he had foolishly underestimated and discarded had turned out to be the architect of his entire existence—and the executioner of his downfall.

With shaking, trembling hands, Harrison reached down and picked up the pen resting on top of the envelope.

He flipped to page twelve. His name was already printed at the bottom line. With a heavy, defeated sigh that sounded like a dying breath, Harrison pressed the ballpoint pen to the paper and scratched his signature across the page.

He didn't look up. He didn't dare meet her eyes again.

"It's... it's done," Harrison whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic sob as he dropped the pen.

Elena picked up the envelope, checked the signature with clinical precision, and slid it back into her briefcase. She pressed the intercom button on her desk.

"Security, please escort Mr. Miller out of the building. Make sure he understands he is never to step foot on these premises again."

Two burly security guards entered the office within seconds, grabbing Harrison by his damp suit shoulders and pulling him to his feet. He didn't fight back. As they dragged him backward toward the heavy glass doors, Harrison caught one last glimpse of Elena.

She had already turned her back to him, gazing serenely out the grand windows toward the sprawling Chicago skyline, bathed in the brilliant golden light of the afternoon sun breaking through the storm clouds. She wasn't watching him leave. To her, he was already completely invisible—a closed chapter in a book she had long finished writing.
