Chapter 12 - The Midnight Trespass

The moon was completely obscured by thick, rolling storm clouds as Harrison parked a battered, rented sedan two blocks away from his former home. The iron gates of the estate loomed darkly against the night sky, looking as impenetrable as a medieval fortress.
Driven by manic desperation, Harrison slipped around the side perimeter fence, finding a loose section near the overgrown garden where the security cameras had recently been upgraded. He didn't care. Adrenaline surged through his veins, blocking out all rational thought. He scrambled over the brick wall, scraping his hands raw, and dropped heavily onto the manicured lawn.
The house was completely dark, save for a dim light glowing from the second-floor study.
Moving like a shadow, Harrison crept toward the rear patio door, testing the handle. To his utter shock, the sliding glass door gave way with a soft click. Elena’s security team had trusted the perimeter alarms so completely that they hadn't double-checked the manual latch after the gardeners left.
He slipped inside into the familiar, cavernous warmth of the foyer. The smell of expensive sandalwood and polished mahogany hit him instantly—the exact scent of the life he had thrown away.
Clack.
Harrison froze, his heart pounding in his throat. He held his breath, creeping silently down the grand hallway toward the library where the wall safe was hidden behind a heavy oil painting.
His fingers trembled as he swung the painting aside, exposing the digital keypad of the safe. He punched in his old birthday. Access Denied. He tried the anniversary of their wedding. Access Denied. Frustrated, sweat dripping into his eyes, he remembered Elena always used her father’s passing date for secure codes. He entered the sequence.
BEEP.
The heavy steel door popped open. Harrison’s eyes widened in triumph as he reached inside, shoving aside tax files and jewelry boxes until his fingers brushed against a heavy leather folder stamped with his late father-in-law's seal.
"Got you," Harrison whispered, a manic grin spreading across his face.
May you like
"I wouldn't move if I were you, Harrison."
The calm, icy voice cut through the darkness of the library like a laser. Harrison whipped around, dropping the folder. Standing in the doorway, wrapped in a silk robe with her arms crossed over her chest, was Elena. She wasn't startled or panicked. She looked entirely unsurprised, watching him like a cat observing a trapped mouse.
