Chapter 12 - THE SECONDS BEFORE THE FALLHook: A distraction in the form of a shattered glass pane alters the battlefield in less than a heartbeat.

The tension in the study was so thick it felt tangible, heavy enough to choke. Marco’s finger hovered over his trigger, waiting for a micro-movement, a twitch of muscle, anything to authorize the shot. But Dr. Bell had positioned herself precisely half a step behind Adrien, creating a human shield that made a clear line of sight impossible.

"You have five seconds, Viscari," Dr. Bell warned, her eyes darting toward the mainframe screens. "Five seconds before I end the heir to the Rostova dynasty."

"Four," Adrien countered, his voice steady as iron, showing no sign of panic. "Three..."

Lena didn't wait for zero.

Her eyes caught the heavy lead crystal inkwell sitting on the mahogany edge of the desk. Without a word, she swept her hand across the wood, hurling the heavy crystal straight at the wall-mounted emergency fire alarm box directly beside Dr. Bell's head.

CRASH.

The glass case shattered instantly. A piercing, deafening klaxon screamed through the penthouse, accompanied by blinding strobe lights flashing in rapid crimson pulses.

Dr. Bell flinched instinctively, her eyes jerking sideways toward the sudden flash of light.

That micro-second of hesitation was all Adrien and Marco needed.

Adrien dropped low, sweeping his leg in a brutal arc that knocked Dr. Bell’s ankles out from under her. Simultaneously, Marco lunged forward, slamming his boot down onto her wrist and sending the Walther clattering across the floor.

Dr. Bell hit the hardwood with a heavy thud, gasping for air as Marco pinned her arms behind her back with merciless precision.
