Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYALHook: A high-stakes standoff in the penthouse ends with a gunshot, a confession, and a digital bomb ticking down to zero.

Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger, but Adrien was already a blur of motion.

Instead of drawing his weapon, Adrien grabbed a heavy bronze decorative vase from a nearby marble console and hurled it with terrifying velocity straight at Julian’s head.

Julian flinched, firing wildly. The bullet slammed into the ceiling plaster, showering them in white dust. In that split-second distraction, Marco lunged forward, tackling the fake doctor to the floor in a brutal collision of limbs and shattering bone.

The silver-plated revolver skidded across the hardwood floor, coming to rest near Lena’s bare feet.

Julian groaned, blood pouring from a split eyebrow as Marco pinned him face-down, driving a knee into the center of his spine.

Adrien walked over slowly, standing above Julian like a towering monument of retribution. He crouched down, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his expensive suit and hauling him up until their eyes met.

"You have approximately ten seconds to tell me where the master decryption key is," Adrien whispered, his voice terrifyingly soft. "Otherwise, I feed you to the river currents."

Julian choked out a wet, hysterical laugh, blood staining his white collar. "You're too late, Viscari... Look at the mainframe terminal in the study."

Adrien’s eyes flicked toward the open office doors. On the wall-mounted security monitors, a red progress bar was ticking downward.

Transfer in progress: 89%... 90%...

"The diary has a digital RFID chip embedded in the spine," Julian wheezed, smiling through his pain. "The moment Lena carried it into the building, it synced with our network. The funds are moving. Once the transfer hits 100%, the New York federal reserves freeze your accounts, and the Bratva hunts down every single person in this room."

Marco slammed the butt of his pistol against the back of Julian's head, knocking him out cold. "Boss! The mainframe is locking us out! We can't cancel the transfer manually!"

Lena looked down at the leather-bound diary clutched in her hands. Her heart hammered against her cracked ribs.

"There's a manual override," Lena said suddenly, remembering a childhood memory whispered by her mother in a dream she thought she had imagined.

"What are you talking about?" Adrien asked, turning to her urgently.

"My mother... she taught me a cipher when I was six. A numerical sequence hidden in the embroidery of the cover." Lena opened the back flap of the diary, tracing her fingers over the stitched leather threads. "It's a decryption key. Give me a keyboard, now!"
