The ballroom was packed with designers, copywriters, and analysts who still had their jobs, their mortgages, and their sanity intact.
I stood near the center of the room, wearing a brand-new tailored tuxedo that actually fit properly, holding a glass of sparkling water.
Across the room, Marcus spotted me.
He walked over slowly, looking like a man approaching a loaded cannon, a sheepish grin plastered across his face.
"Hey, Ethan," Marcus said, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Hey, Marcus," I replied, taking a calm sip of my drink.
Marcus reached into his pocket, pulled out a crumpled twenty-dollar bill, and handed it across to me.
"You know," Marcus muttered, shaking his head in disbelief, "I still don't understand how a dare to sit beside the Ice Queen ended with you running the entire creative division."

"Next time, Marcus," I said, looking over toward the executive table where Claire was raising a glass of champagne in our direction, "you should pick a better hiding spot."
