Chapter 5 - Pinned in the Dark"Hide," Maya hissed, grabbing my arm and yanking me behind the concrete pillar just as the staircase door slammed shut.

We crouched low beside the rear bumper of the matte-black Mercedes. My heart was pounding so violently I was certain whoever just entered the garage could hear it.
"Who could know we're down here?" I whispered, my lips brushing Maya's ear.
"Mercer’s internal security detail," Maya whispered back, her face pale. "They must have tracked the encrypted signal when I messaged your phone. They're sweeping the lower levels."
Footsteps approached, slowing down near the elevator bank just twenty feet away from our hiding spot.
"Sector B3 is clear of personnel," a gruff, deep voice crackled over a handheld radio static channel. "Sweep the perimeter near the service elevators again. Mercer wants total containment before midnight."
"Copy that."
The sound of footsteps began moving away toward the opposite end of the garage.
I let out a long, shaky breath, wiping a bead of sweat from my forehead. But the relief was short-lived. My phone—which I had forgotten to put on silent—suddenly lit up inside my coat pocket, vibrating violently with an incoming call.
The screen flashed a bright, blinding white against the dark concrete: CLIFFORD WHITMORE—no, wait. CLAIRE WHITMORE.
The vibration hummed loudly against the metal body of the Mercedes.
Footsteps stopped instantly.
"Did you hear that?" the security guard's voice echoed through the garage, much closer this time.
Maya cursed under her breath, reaching out to grab my phone, but I was faster. I pulled it out and slid my thumb across the screen, answering the call before the second ring could finish.
"Ethan," Claire’s urgent whisper came through the speaker. "Get out of Level B3 right now. Mercer just left the ballroom. He knows about the drive."
"Too late," I whispered back, my voice trembling. "They're in the garage. Security is right outside our pillar."
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness, slicing across the concrete floor just inches from my shoes.

"Hey! You there! Step away from the vehicle with your hands where we can see them!"
The gruff voice boomed across the parking level. The beam of the flashlight snapped upward, blinding us with its intense white glare as it locked directly onto our hiding spot behind the Mercedes.
