Chapter 8 - The Monday Morning AfterThe sun rose over downtown Chicago on Monday morning, painting the glassy skyscrapers in shades of brilliant amber and gold.

I walked through the glass double doors of Northstar Creative Group carrying a cardboard box containing my coffee mug, a small succulent plant, and three sketchpads.

The office was eerily quiet.

At the front desk, Marcus and Melissa were staring at their computer screens with expressions of absolute horror, whispering frantically among themselves.

As I walked past their desks, Marcus looked up, his face pale as a ghost.

"Ethan... did you see the news?"

"What news?" I asked innocently, setting my box down on my desk.

"Grant Mercer was arrested by federal agents at O'Hare airport three hours ago," Melissa blurted out, her voice trembling. "And the entire board of directors just resigned en masse. Rumor has it the company is being placed under federal receivership."

"Wow," I said, trying to look appropriately surprised. "Who could have seen that coming?"

Marcus stared at me, his eyes wide with a strange mix of confusion and newfound respect. "At the gala... you sat at the executive table with Claire Whitmore. What did she say to you?"

Before I could answer, the glass door of the executive corner office swung open.

Claire Whitmore stepped out.

She wore a charcoal-gray pantsuit that looked like armor, her hair immaculate, her expression composed. But as her eyes scanned the open-plan office and eventually landed on me, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of her lips.

She didn't say anything to the room. She simply turned and gestured toward her office door with a slight nod of her head.

My heart did a familiar, nervous little flip.

I picked up my coffee mug, walked past Marcus and Melissa—who were now looking at me as if I were an entirely different species—and headed straight for the executive office.
