Chapter 6 - The Garage Chase"Run!" Maya yelled, shoving me hard toward the service stairwell on the opposite side of the pillar.

We bolted from the shadows just as heavy boots pounded across the concrete behind us.
"Stop right there!" the guard shouted, his footsteps closing in fast.
I didn't look back. Pumping my arms, my dress shoes slipping slightly on the slick concrete, I sprinted toward the heavy metal fire door. Maya was right beside me, moving with surprising agility for someone buried in code all day.
I slammed my shoulder into the push-bar of the fire door, and it flew open, revealing a concrete stairwell spiraling upward into darkness.
We scrambled up the steps, taking them two at a time, our lungs burning from the sudden burst of exertion. Below us, we could hear the heavy boots of the security guards clattering onto the metal landing, shouting into their radios.
"We need to get to the roof!" Maya gasped, her breathing coming in ragged gasps as we reached the landing for Level 4.
"The roof? Are you insane? That's a dead end!"
"It's not a dead end if there's a chopper waiting!" Maya shot back, pushing open the heavy door leading out into the cold Chicago night air.
A gust of freezing wind whipped across the open-air parking deck, carrying the distant hum of city traffic and the heavy, rhythmic thrumming of helicopter rotor blades.
I stumbled out onto the roof, shielding my eyes from the blinding spotlights of a private chopper idling near the center helipad.
The cabin door slid open, and a figure stepped down onto the tarmac, ducking against the ferocious wind generated by the blades.
It was Claire.
She wore no evening wrap, her elegant gown whipping wildly around her legs, her face cold and resolute.
"Did you get the drive?" she shouted over the deafening roar of the engine.
I pulled the USB flash drive from my coat pocket and held it up high, watching as Claire's expression shifted from pure terror to fierce, unyielding triumph.
Behind us, the stairwell door burst open with a loud bang.

Two security guards spilled out onto the roof, guns drawn, shouting commands that were completely swallowed by the roar of the helicopter blades.
And right behind them, stepping calmly into the freezing wind with his hands tucked neatly into his tailored pockets, was Grant Mercer.
