Chapter 7 - Checkmate on the HelipadGrant Mercer didn't look panicked. He looked amused.

He raised his voice over the deafening roar of the chopper, taking slow, deliberate steps toward us across the open concrete deck.
"End of the line, Claire," Mercer called out, a smug smile playing on his lips. "You really thought a couple of mid-level desk jockeys could outmaneuver a multi-million-dollar acquisition firm? Hand over the flash drive, Ethan. You're out of your depth."
I looked at the drive in my hand, then at Claire, who stood firmly beside the open cabin door of the helicopter.
"He's right, Ethan," Claire said, her voice cutting through the wind with absolute clarity. "You don't have to be part of this. Hand it to him, and walk away."
I stared at her, stunned. "What? After everything?"
"If you get on that chopper with me, your life as you know it is over," Claire said, her gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned right through the freezing night air. "You'll be hunted by corporate lawyers, blacklisted from every design firm in the country, and tied up in federal investigations for the next ten years. Go back downstairs. Take the twenty dollars Marcus owes you. Pretend none of this happened."
I looked back at Mercer. He was grinning now, holding out his hand expectantly.
"Be smart, kid," Mercer said, stopping ten feet away. "The world belongs to people who know when to fold."
I thought about Marcus laughing beside the ficus tree. I thought about the forty-three people whose livelihoods were about to be erased because men like Mercer viewed human lives as line items on a spreadsheet. I thought about the terrified, fierce look in Claire's eyes when she grabbed my wrist under the tablecloth.
I looked down at the flash drive in my palm.
Then, slowly, deliberately, I slipped it into Claire's outstretched hand.
Mercer's smile widened into a triumphant grin. "Good choice, Cole. You've got a bright fut—"
Before Mercer could finish his sentence, Maya stepped forward and held up her own smartphone, tapping the screen once with her thumb.
"Too bad for you, Grant," Maya shouted over the wind. "The moment Ethan handed that drive to Ms. Whitmore, our automated redundancy protocol kicked in. The entire unencrypted ledger, audio logs of your board meetings, and Apex Media's bank transfers were automatically uploaded to the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission servers five seconds ago."
Mercer’s triumphant smile vanished instantly. Color drained completely from his face.

"You didn't..." he whispered.
"Oh, we did," Claire said coldly, climbing up into the helicopter cabin and holding the flash drive up like a trophy. "Checkmate, Grant."
