Chapter 4 - The Ghost in Level B3The hotel’s underground parking garage smelled of exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and old money. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a harsh, sickly green glow over rows of luxury sedans and silent SUVs.

I kept my hands buried deep in my coat pockets, my fingers curled tightly around the plastic body of the USB drive.

Level B3 was completely deserted. The rhythmic click of my dress shoes against the concrete echoed loudly, amplifying my paranoia. Every shadow cast by a concrete pillar looked like a threat.

When I reached the third pillar from the elevator, I stopped, checking my watch. 10:14 PM.

"You're late."

A voice snapped out from the shadows behind a matte-black Mercedes.

I spun around, my breath catching in my throat. A woman stepped out from the darkness, adjusting the collar of a heavy wool trench coat. It wasn't Claire. It was someone younger—maybe twenty-eight—with sharp features, wire-rimmed glasses, and eyes that looked like she hadn't slept since 2024.

"Who are you?" I demanded, taking a half-step back.

"My name is Maya Vance," she said, flashing a security badge that read Northstar Creative: Lead Systems Architect. "And you're the designer Claire dragged into her suicide mission tonight."

"Suicide mission?" I echoed. "What is going on? Claire slipped me a flash drive and Mercer is talking about dismantling the entire creative division by Monday."

Maya let out a bitter laugh, walking closer and pulling out her own phone. She tapped the screen, and a blue holographic glow illuminated her face.

"Mercer isn't just restructuring Northstar, Ethan. He's liquidating it from the inside out. For the past six months, Mercer Advisory has been orchestrating fake corporate deficits, routing company funds into offshore shell accounts, and tanking our stock value on purpose."

"Why would they do that?" I asked, baffled. "Northstar is a multi-million-dollar agency."

"Because a rival conglomerate—Apex Media—wants our portfolio, our patents, and our prime downtown real estate for pennies on the dollar," Maya explained rapidly, her fingers flying across her screen. "To make that hostile takeover legal, they needed Northstar to look financially insolvent. They needed a scapegoat. And the entire executive board—including our CEO—is in on it."

"Except Claire," I realized, the pieces suddenly clicking into place.

"Except Claire," Maya confirmed, stopping in front of me. "She discovered the offshore transfers three weeks ago. She’s been building an internal compliance case in absolute secrecy. But she couldn't upload it to the main servers without triggering Mercer’s automated firewall, which would wipe the data instantly."

Maya held out her hand.

"That flash drive in your pocket contains the financial ledger proving Apex Media's conspiracy, along with the digital signatures of every corrupt board member."

I looked down at my hand, suddenly feeling like I was holding a live grenade.

"If Mercer knows we have this," I whispered, "what stops them from burying us?"

Before Maya could answer, the heavy steel door of the parking garage stairwell creaked open with a loud, metallic screech.

Heavy footsteps echoed against the concrete floor.
