Chapter 19 - The Trial of Richard Mercer

Six months later, the federal trial of United States v. Richard Mercer and Victor Sterling became the high-profile spectacle of the decade.
I took the witness stand on the fifth day. Wearing a sharp dark navy suit, I looked directly at the jury. Behind the defense table sat Richard, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, looking hollow and visibly aged.
The prosecutor played the video from that fateful night at the executive lounge. The silence in the courtroom was absolute as the crack of Richard’s slap echoed through the speakers.
"Ms. Rostova," the prosecutor asked. "What did the defendant say to you right after striking you?"
"He told me to know my place," I answered calmly.
"And what is your place, Ms. Rostova?"
I looked directly at Richard.

"My place is at the head of the company he tried to destroy."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours. Guilty on all thirty-four counts. Richard Mercer was sentenced to thirty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
