Chapter 2 - The Lockdown

“Investigate?” Richard choked out, his eyes darting frantically between Marcus and me. “Elena? You’re a low-level contract lawyer!”
“I let you believe that,” I said, pulling a pristine white handkerchief from my clutch and pressing it to my lip. “Just like I let you believe you were a genius for hiding your embezzlement through offshore shell companies. Your arrogance was your biggest liability.”
Richard’s panic ignited into rage. He lunged toward me, but two massive security guards—men I had stationed at the doors thirty minutes prior—stepped between us, shoving him back.
“You set me up!” Richard screamed, spit flying from his lips. “Daniel, call legal! Call the team!”

I smiled through the stinging pain in my mouth. “Daniel can’t help you. His login credentials were revoked five minutes ago. In fact, both of your offices are currently being raided by my team.”
Richard went completely still. His entire fifteen-year career, his reputation, his freedom—all of it was dissolving in front of twenty-three executives and a dozen recording smartphones. He turned and sprinted toward the elevator, desperate to get to his office and destroy his hard drives.
