Chapter 7 - The Police Arrive

Red and blue lights began flashing through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 40th floor. The wail of police sirens pierced the night air, growing louder until they stopped directly in front of the Halcyon building.
“Elena, wait!” Richard begged, his voice cracking into a pathetic sob. The arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by raw, humiliating terror. He fell to his knees right there in the boardroom. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry I hit you! It was the stress, the alcohol—I didn’t mean it! Please, I love you!”
I looked down at the man who had spent a decade belittling me, silencing me, and finally, striking me.

“You didn’t hit me out of stress, Richard. You hit me because you thought I was weak. You thought I was property.” I crouched down so we were eye-to-eye. “But a predator should always make sure they know who they’re in the cage with.”
The elevator pinged. Four federal agents stepped out, their badges gleaming against their tactical vests.
