Chapter 3 - The Empty Hard Drives

I didn’t chase him. I simply rode the executive elevator up with Marcus Vance in comfortable silence. When the doors opened on the 40th floor, we found Richard frantically pounding on his office door. The electronic keypad was flashing red.

“Let me in!” Richard bellowed, slamming his fists against the reinforced glass.

I held up a small silver master keycard. “Looking for this?”

I tapped the reader. The door unlocked, and Richard shoved past me, lunging for his laptop. He ripped it open and began typing with trembling fingers, desperate to initiate a master wipe of his files.

“Delete, delete, delete,” he muttered, sweat pouring down his temples.

“Richard,” I said gently, leaning against the doorframe. “Do you honestly think a senior compliance investigator would wait until the confrontation to secure the evidence?”

He hit the enter key. A giant Halcyon Dynamics logo appeared on his screen, followed by a blinking message: ACCESS DENIED. ALL FILES CLONED AND SECURED BY VANGUARD COMPLIANCE.

He collapsed into his leather chair, running his hands through his hair. “Elena, please. You’re my wife. You can’t do this to me. We can fix this.”
