Chapter 16 - Underground Warfare"Lock the secondary blast doors!" Mr. Weber yelled into the security console, his hands shaking as he punched codes into the terminal.

Heavy steel slabs slammed into place across the entrance corridor, muffling the distant, concussive boom of an explosive charge echoing through the concrete tunnels. But we knew the blast doors wouldn't hold against professional military-grade demolition charges for more than ten minutes.

"Is there an emergency extraction route?" I asked, keeping my voice completely calm—the same tone I used during critical trauma codes in the hospital ER.

"Only the maintenance utility shaft," Mr. Weber stammered, pointing toward a narrow, vertical tunnel hidden behind a utility rack. "It leads up to the city’s drainage system, but it’s a vertical climb of fifty feet, and it's heavily monitored."

"Lead the way," I said, slipping off my expensive designer jacket, rolling up my sleeves, and gripping the rungs of the metal ladder.

As we began our grueling ascent up the dark, damp shaft, a muffled explosion shook the bank far below us, followed by the sound of heavy boots swarming into the vault we had just vacated. We were only halfway up when a flashlight beam cut through the darkness from below.

"They're in the shaft!" Mr. Weber hissed from above me.

Without hesitation, I reached into my handbag, pulled out a heavy steel-handled medical flashlight, and hurled it downward with all my strength, catching the lead mercenary squarely in the chest and sending him tumbling backward into the darkness.
