Chapter 5 - Entering the Lion's DenDawn broke cold and gray, casting long shadows across the towering glass monolith of Vance Enterprises downtown. Wearing a tailored black Chanel suit that had belonged to a wealthy benefactor from my nursing days, I stepped out of a taxi and looked up at the fifty-story skyscraper that was now legally mine.

Security guards at the front desk moved to intercept me, but I pulled the heavy, emerald-encrusted golden key from my pocket and laid it on the marble reception counter.
"Announce to the board of directors," I said, my voice echoing through the grand lobby, "that the new CEO has arrived."
Ten minutes later, I was walking down the executive hallway toward the boardroom. The double mahogany doors burst open, and Victoria rushed out, her face flushed with disbelief and fury.
"You have no right to be here!" Victoria screamed, drawing the attention of every executive and assistant on the floor. "Arthur Pendelton is filing an emergency injunction right now! You are an interloper, a gold-digging nurse who tricked a dying man!"
I stopped just inches from her, looking down my nose at her panicked expression. I didn't raise my voice; I let every word cut like a scalpel.
"Check your emails, Victoria," I replied calmly. "Mr. Harrison filed the probate documents at midnight. The marriage is fully recognized, my inheritance is validated, and as of three minutes ago, I have frozen all corporate accounts tied to your name pending an internal forensic audit for embezzlement."

Victoria’s jaw dropped. She lunged forward, her nails clawing toward my face, but before she could touch me, the elevator doors chiming behind me opened. Three federal agents in dark suits stepped out, badges gleaming in the fluorescent light.
"Victoria Vance?" the lead agent asked, stepping forward. "You are under arrest for corporate racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder."
