Chapter 2 - The Vultures CircleThe ink on Thomas’s death certificate was barely dry before the wolves arrived at my modest apartment door.

Less than two hours after Mr. Harrison left, a sleek black limousine blocked my rusted Honda Civic in the driveway. Out stepped Victoria Vance—Thomas’s ruthless niece and the former COO of Vance Enterprises—flanked by two towering private security guards and a high-priced corporate litigator named Arthur Pendelton.

Victoria didn't knock; she forced her way past me into my small living room, her eyes sweeping over the threadbare sofa and peeling wallpaper with undisguised contempt.

"You must think you're clever, old woman," Victoria hissed, stepping close enough for me to smell her expensive perfume. "A cheap hospital nurse playing the weeping widow card to snatch a ten-billion-dollar empire from the people who actually built it. My uncle was out of his mind on painkillers when he married you. We are filing an emergency injunction for undue influence and mental incompetence by tomorrow morning."

I stood my ground, my decades of working emergency hospital wards suddenly kicking in. The fear that had paralyzed me moments before hardened into cold steel.

"Your uncle Thomas was sharper on his deathbed than you will ever be in your entire life, Victoria," I replied, my voice shockingly steady. "He chose me. And according to Mr. Harrison, the paperwork is entirely airtight. Now, get out of my home before I call the police and have you dragged out for trespassing."

Victoria’s face contorted with pure rage. She leaned in, whispering a venomous threat that chilled me to the bone: "Enjoy your title while it lasts, nurse. Because before this week is over, you won't just lose the money—you'll lose your life."
