Chapter 3 - The Yellowed EnvelopeLocking the door behind the retreating vultures, I collapsed onto the kitchen chair. My hands shook as I reached back into the mahogany box and pulled out the thick, yellowed envelope. I broke the old-fashioned wax seal and slid out several sheets of heavy parchment covered in Thomas’s familiar, elegant cursive.

“My dearest Nancy,” the letter began.

“If you are reading this, the final phase of my life's work is complete. I know you hate me for leaving you at the bus station fifty-six years ago. You thought I chose my father’s lumber business over you. The truth is much darker. My father was heavily indebted to a ruthless cartel of industrial barons who threatened to kill you and your entire family if I didn't stay, marry into their inner circle, and sign away my life to their syndicate. I let you hate me so you could live.

For decades, I built Vance Enterprises from the ashes of that corruption, gathering evidence, buying out my enemies one by one, and waiting for the right moment to dismantle the syndicate from within. But the cancer caught up to me before I could finish. My family—Victoria and her co-conspirators—are deeply intertwined with the syndicate. They murdered my business partners, and they would have killed you if you stayed back then. By marrying me, you didn't just inherit my wealth; you inherited my war.

The green key in the box opens the Omega Vault beneath the corporate headquarters. Inside, you will find the federal indictments, the offshore bank accounts, and the proof that will either put Victoria behind bars for the rest of her life—or get us both killed. Trust no one, Nancy. Not even your own shadow.”

The letter slipped from my numb fingers. Fifty-six years of resentment, rewritten in a single breath. He hadn't abandoned me out of selfishness; he had sacrificed our love to save my life. And now, he had passed the torch of his vengeance into my trembling hands.
