Chapter 8 - Arthur's Counter-AttackBefore I could slip the silver ring onto my finger, the heavy steel door of the Omega Vault slammed shut behind me with a terrifying, mechanical lock-click.

The terminal screen flickered, the video feed cutting to black, replaced by a flashing red warning: System Override Engaged. Facility Lockdown Active.
"Well, well, well," a smooth, chilling voice echoed over the vault’s intercom speaker system.
I spun around. On the security camera feed mounted inside the vault, Arthur Pendelton—Victoria’s high-priced attorney—was standing at the executive desk outside, typing rapidly into the master control console.
"Arthur!" I shouted toward the camera lens. "You're too late! The federal agents are already downstairs!"
"Federal agents, my dear Nancy?" Arthur laughed coldly, his voice dripping with condescension. "Victoria was just a pawn. A loud, greedy distraction to keep everyone looking the other way while I quietly acquired controlling shares of the entire board. And as for the feds? Let's just say my influence in Washington runs much deeper than a dying old man's posthumous revenge."

The temperature inside the vault suddenly began to drop. The automated climate control system hissed, venting freezing carbon dioxide gas into the sealed chamber.
"You have ten minutes before the oxygen levels drop to zero, Nancy," Arthur said smoothly. "All you have to do is slide the master flash drive under the door, sign the corporate waiver transferring ownership to my holding company, and I’ll let you walk out with your life. Refuse, and your final resting place will be right beside Thomas."
