Chapter 8 - The Deep State ConspiracyThe interrogation room at the precinct was cold, sterile, and lit by a harsh overhead fluorescent bulb that buzzed faintly.

Nathan sat on one side of the metal table, staring through the two-way mirror at Chloe. She sat slumped in her chair, her makeup smeared, her expensive designer blouse wrinkled. The mask of polished domestic perfection was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, hardened stare.

The door opened, and Detective Vance walked in, tossing a thick case file onto the table.

"We unlocked Marcus's phone and decrypted Chloe's laptop," Detective Vance said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "Mr. Hayes, what you stumbled into tonight isn't just a local embezzlement scheme or a personal vendetta. It's a syndicate."

Nathan looked up slowly. "A syndicate?"

"Apex Holdings is a front for a massive international asset-laundering network operating across three continents," Vance explained, sliding a series of printed emails across the table. "Marcus was the financial architect. But Chloe? Chloe was the infiltrator. She specialized in getting close to corporate executives, finding their vulnerabilities, and either buying them out or eliminating them."

Nathan stared at the photos of documents detailing Elena's final days. "She targeted Elena because Elena was auditing their division."

"Worse than that," Vance corrected grimly. "Elena wasn't just auditing them; she had already sent a digital dead-man's switch package to a federal prosecutor in Washington. But Marcus and Chloe intercepted it before it hit the desk. They faked her car accident to make it look like a tragic DUI. They forced her car off the cliff after disabling her brakes."

Nathan’s fists clenched so hard his fingernails broke the skin of his palms. "And then she married me. She walked into my house, raised my children, slept in my bed... just to keep tabs on me in case Elena left any physical backups here."

"Precisely," Vance nodded. "She thought she was safe. She thought she had buried the secret forever. Until Maya woke up and saw her standing on the porch that night."

Nathan stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor. "I want to talk to her."

Vance hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Five minutes, Nathan. Don't do anything stupid."
