Chapter 3 - The Digital VaultMidnight descended upon the house like a lead blanket. Maya and Leo were finally fast asleep upstairs, exhausted from crying, their bedroom door locked from the inside with an extra bolt Nathan had hastily installed.

Nathan sat alone in the dark home office. The only light came from the harsh, bluish glare of Elena’s old laptop screen.

For two years, the password had been a mystery. Nathan had tried their anniversary, birthdays, favorite vacation spots—nothing worked. But tonight, staring at the screen with a mind racing from Chloe's parting words, a memory struck him. Elena’s favorite quote, something she muttered whenever they cracked a difficult case at their forensic accounting firm: Truth hides in plain sight.

He looked at the digital photo of their wedding day set as the desktop background. Elena’s wedding dress had a specific number of handmade pearl buttons along the back. Thirty-seven.

He typed in 37pearls!.

The screen flickered. The desktop unlocked.

Nathan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He immediately opened the encrypted files directory. There were folders dating back to the week before Elena’s death. He clicked on one labeled Internal Audit - Apex Holdings.

Apex Holdings. Chloe’s maiden name was Chloe Apex? No—Chloe Sterling. But wait. As Nathan scrolled through the scanned financial documents, a corporate letterhead made his blood run cold.

Apex Holdings was a shell corporation. And the primary signatory on its offshore accounts wasn't a stranger. It was Marcus Sterling—Chloe’s brother, a man Nathan had met once at a cocktail party, introduced merely as a "hedge fund manager."

Nathan opened a sub-folder titled Evidence Backup. Inside were dozens of scanned emails, bank statements, and voice memos. He clicked on a voice memo recorded three days before Elena’s death.

He clicked play.

Elena’s voice filled the silent room, sounding stressed and urgent. "If anything happens to me, it's not an accident. Marcus Sterling and his sister Chloe have been systematically embezzling thirty million dollars from the corporate pension fund. They used my signature as a proxy. I refused to sign the final transfer. They threatened me. Chloe said..."

The audio cut out with a sharp screech of feedback.

Nathan sat paralyzed. Thirty million dollars. The embezzlement wasn't just a corporate crime; it was an execution. Elena had discovered the fraud, refused to participate, and they had silenced her. And Chloe hadn’t just comforted a grieving widower—she had infiltrated his life to monitor him, to make sure Elena hadn't hidden any physical copies of the audit trail in the house.
