Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the ConfessionHeavy tactical boots thundered up the stairs. Before Marcus could turn toward the doorway, three heavily armed officers flooded the office, subduing him with brutal efficiency, slamming him face-first onto the rug and clicking steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Chloe tried to bolt down the hallway, but two officers cut her off instantly, pushing her against the wall and snapping cuffs around her delicate wrists.
"Let me go! You don't know who you're dealing with! My lawyer will—" Chloe screamed, her manicured nails clawing uselessly at the wallpaper until her voice dissolved into broken, hysterical sobbing.
Nathan stood frozen by the desk, the titanium flash drive still clutched safely in his hand. The adrenaline slowly began to recede, leaving a hollow, echoing ache in his chest.
An officer stepped forward, touching Nathan’s shoulder gently. "Mr. Hayes? Are you and the children alright?"
"My kids," Nathan gasped, suddenly remembering. "Upstairs... the master bedroom. They're locked inside."
"We'll check them right now, sir. Medics are on the way."
Ten minutes later, Maya and Leo were wrapped in warm emergency blankets, sitting safely on the living room sofa while paramedics checked them over. Maya looked up, her big eyes locking onto Nathan as he walked over.
"Is the bad lady gone, Dad?" Maya asked softly.
Nathan dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of his children, burying his face in Maya’s hair as tears finally broke free. "She's gone, sweetie. She's never coming back. You're safe now. Both of you."
Across the room, Chloe was being led out in handcuffs, her head covered by a police jacket, screaming obscenities into the night air. Marcus walked beside her, silent, his face bruised and defeated.
As the police cruiser doors slammed shut, an investigator walked up to Nathan, holding a manila folder recovered from Marcus’s jacket pocket.
"Mr. Hayes, forensics just pulled this off your brother-in-law. It’s a physical ledger linking Apex Holdings to the offshore accounts. But there's something else you need to see. Something even the auditors missed."
Nathan took the folder with trembling hands. He opened the first page.
It wasn't just about thirty million dollars. It was a signed medical consent form dated two years ago—the exact week Elena died.

The primary beneficiary listed on Elena’s undisclosed private life insurance policy—worth ten million dollars—wasn't Nathan.
It was Chloe Sterling.
