Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the DarkNathan’s instincts, honed by years of late-night security details and pure adrenaline, kicked in instantly. He grabbed the heavy brass paperweight from the desk and slipped out into the hallway, moving in total silence.

The house was pitch black. Moonlight filtered through the large foyer window, casting long, eerie shadows across the stairs.

Footsteps. Heavy, deliberate footsteps creaked on the hardwood floor downstairs.

Nathan crept down the staircase, hugging the wall. Peering over the banister into the living room, he saw a dark silhouette standing by the bookshelf. The intruder wasn't trying to hide; they were actively tearing the books off the shelves, searching frantically for something specific.

"Don't move," Nathan said, his voice echoing sharply in the open space as he leaped down the final three steps, raising the heavy paperweight.

The silhouette froze, then slowly turned around.

It wasn't Chloe. It was a man with broad shoulders, wearing a black tactical jacket. As the moonlight hit his face, Nathan recognized him instantly from a distant family photo on Chloe's phone.

Marcus Sterling. Chloe’s brother.

Marcus didn't look scared. In fact, a cold, dangerous grin spread across his face. He slowly pulled his hands out of his jacket pockets, holding a silenced pistol.

"Well, well, well. Look who decided to play detective," Marcus said, his voice smooth and unnervingly calm. "You really should have stayed at your office, Nathan. Ignorance is such a comfortable blanket."

"You killed my wife," Nathan said, his grip on the paperweight turning his knuckles white. "You and your sister murdered Elena."

Marcus chuckled, stepping casually toward the center of the room. "Murder is such a harsh, ugly word, Nathan. Let's call it... a necessary corporate restructuring. Elena was being difficult. She didn't understand the bigger picture. Thirty million dollars can buy a lot of compliance, but she chose martyrdom instead."

"You're going to prison for the rest of your life," Nathan snarled. "I have the digital audit on Elena's laptop. It's already backed up to a secure cloud server. The feds have it."

Marcus stopped walking. For a brief second, a flicker of genuine panic crossed his face. But it vanished just as quickly, replaced by a chilling smirk.

"Do you really think we were stupid enough to leave a single digital trail?" Marcus tilted his head. "Check your cloud backup right now, Nathan. Go ahead."

Nathan’s stomach plummeted. He pulled out his phone with his left hand, opening the cloud storage app. The screen refreshed, displaying a bleak message: Error 404: File Corrupted / Account Deauthorized.

"That's right," Marcus said, raising the silencer slightly, aiming it straight at Nathan’s chest. "Chloe didn't just pack a bag when she left tonight. She remotely wiped your local network using admin credentials she planted months ago. Everything you found? Gone. Just like your first wife."
