Chapter 13 - The Broken Promise

James collapsed onto the carpet with a sharp groan, dropping the glowing silver device. I lunged forward, grabbed the device, and smashed it under my heel until the circuitry shattered into useless sparks.
Sarah kept the iron poker leveled at his chest. "Get up, James. Or I swear to God I’ll finish what the fire started twelve years ago."
James spat blood onto the floor, looking up at us with a bitter, defeated laugh. "You think destroying that scanner stops them? Victoria’s private security detail is parked outside your house right now. Look out the window, Eleanor!"
I pulled back the blinds. Parked down our quiet suburban street were three black luxury sedans, their engines idling silently in the rain. Armed men in tactical gear were casually standing along the perimeter of our front yard, cutting off every escape route.
My phone rang in my pocket. An unknown caller ID.
I answered, putting it on speaker.
"Mrs. Grayson," a smooth, cultured female voice echoed through the speaker. "I see my brother’s former asset failed his extraction mission. How disappointing. But let us skip the pleasantries. I am Victoria Vance."

"Get off my property!" I demanded, my hands shaking.
"I have no interest in your suburban property," Victoria replied coldly. "I want the biological data contained within the infant. You have five minutes to bring her out to the street, or my men will level your house with your three boys still inside."
