Chapter 16 - Into the Lion’s Den

I wasn't going to let my sister die for me a second time.

I strapped Hope securely into her chest carrier, picked up the keycard to James’s hidden trunk in the garage, and pulled out his licensed service firearm. I had never shot a gun in my life, but as I loaded the magazine, my hands didn't shake. The instinct to protect my family superseded every trace of fear.

I drove through the blinding storm toward the industrial shipping district at the edge of the city. The harbor dry docks were a desolate graveyard of rusty cranes and crumbling brick warehouses rotting against the black ocean.

I parked three blocks away, creeping through the shadowed alleys until I reached Warehouse 4.

Inside, the vast concrete floor was illuminated by floodlights. Sarah was tied to a steel chair in the center of the room, her face bruised. Standing over her was Victoria Vance—a tall, elegant woman in a dark trench coat, flanked by four armed mercenaries.

"Where is the child, Sarah?" Victoria demanded, striking my sister across the face. "Your time has run out."

"She isn't coming," Sarah choked out through bloodied lips. "You lost, Victoria."

I stepped out from behind a stack of shipping containers, racking the slide of the pistol with a loud, metallic clack that echoed through the hollow warehouse.

"She’s right here," I called out, my voice booming in the vast space.
